Char Dham Yatra Guide
Char Dham Yatra, especially the four Dhams in Uttarakhand, is a revered pilgrimage taken by hundreds of thousands of devotees, if not millions, every year. It is believed that every practicing Hindu must complete this pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. The Chardham, more appropriately called the Chota Char Dham (i.e., Small Char Dhams), are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath & Badrinath. These are all located in the Garhwal region in the Uttarakhand and hold immense spiritual significance. Even if you are not a religious person, these sights offer some of the most breathtaking views of the Himalayas.
Now, while you are free to take the journey, however you want and in whichever order you prefer, this path is traditionally undertaken from west to east. The order is:
- 1. Yamunotri - Source of river Yamuna, which is also revered for its healing powers
- 2. Gangotri - The origin of the Ganges River
- 3. Kedarnath - Abode of Lord Shiva, nestled in the snow-capped peaks
- 4. Badrinath - Dedicated to Lord Vishnu; also known for its hot springs
Now, the best time to go on the Char Dham Yatra is either in the months of April - June (as the weather is the most pleasant during this time) or in the months of September - November (fewer crowds). Avoid the monsoon seasons if you can due to unexpected weather. The whole Char Dham Yatra could be covered in 10 days.
Note that the Char Dhams are only open for six months a year and are inaccessible in the other half due to heavy snowfall.
