The Chardham Yatra is traditionally undertaken in a clockwise direction, starting at Yamunotri and concluding at Badrinath. This sequence β€” Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath β€” is considered auspicious and has been followed by pilgrims for centuries.

Yamunotri (3,291 m) is where River Yamuna originates. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, sits at the end of a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti. Gangotri (3,100 m) marks the origin of the sacred Ganga and is directly accessible by road. Kedarnath (3,553 m) is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and sits atop an 18 km trek from Gaurikund. Badrinath (3,133 m), the final dham, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is the most visited shrine of the four.

The journey from Chennai begins with a flight or train to Delhi, followed by a road journey into the Himalayas via Haridwar β€” the gateway to Chardham.

Since 2014, registration for Chardham Yatra is compulsory for every pilgrim, Indian or foreign. Without a valid registration e-pass (Yatra Parchi), entry to any of the four dhams is not permitted. Registration for 2026 opened on 6 March 2026 and is completely free of charge.

How to register: Visit registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, download the 'Tourist Care Uttarakhand' app, or WhatsApp 'YATRA' to +91 8394833833. Offline counters are available in Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun from 17 April 2026 onwards.

Important: Upon successful registration, you receive a QR-coded Yatra Registration Letter. Carry a printed copy as mobile connectivity in the Himalayan region can be limited. The government uses GPS-based pilgrim tracking for real-time safety management.

How to Reach Chardham from Chennai

By Air

Chennai International Airport (MAA) has direct and one-stop flights to Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi (DEL). From Delhi, the road journey to Haridwar takes 5–6 hours. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Haridwar/Rishikesh (55 km) β€” some travellers prefer flying to Dehradun directly to save driving time.

By Train

Several trains connect Chennai Central to Delhi β€” the Tamil Nadu Express (12621), Grand Trunk Express (12615), and Chennai Rajdhani (22691) are popular options. From Delhi, trains run to Haridwar station (Dehradun-bound trains stop at Haridwar). Rishikesh is the railhead closest to the yatra route, but Haridwar has better connectivity.

By Road from Delhi to Haridwar

Delhi to Haridwar is approximately 220 km via NH-334 and NH-58. The drive takes 5–6 hours depending on traffic. Our vehicles pick you up directly from Delhi airport or railway station and transfer you to Haridwar.

Best Time to Visit Chardham from Chennai

The Chardham Yatra season runs from late April to early November each year. The temples are closed during winter due to heavy snowfall.

May – June: Opening months with pleasant weather. Crowds increase after April opening. Ideal for trekking. Snow may still be visible on surrounding peaks.

July – August: Monsoon season. Heavy rains can cause landslides and road closures, especially on the Kedarnath and Gangotri routes. Travel is possible but requires careful monitoring of weather updates. Not recommended for first-time pilgrims.

September – October: The best time to travel. Monsoon recedes, skies are clear, views are spectacular, and the Himalayan roads are in good condition. Crowd levels are moderate and temperatures are comfortable.

Note: Temples close in early November (Bhai Dooj for Yamunotri/Kedarnath/Gangotri; Vijay Dashami for Badrinath). After closing, the deities are moved to their winter abodes β€” Yamunotri's idol to Kharsali, Gangotri to Mukhba village, Kedarnath to Ukhimath, and Badrinath to Joshimath.

At Yamunotri, visit the Surya Kund β€” a natural hot water spring where pilgrims traditionally cook rice or potatoes by immersing them in cloth. Proceed to the Yamunotri Temple for darshan of Goddess Yamuna. After darshan, trek back down to Janki Chatti and drive to Barkot. Overnight at Barkot.

Day 05 Barkot to Uttarkashi (4 hrs drive)

In the evening, visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi, one of the oldest Shiva temples in the Garhwal region. Overnight at Uttarkashi.

Day 06 Uttarkashi – Gangotri Darshan – Uttarkashi (100 km one way)

Start early for Gangotri. Drive through the scenic Bhagirathi valley, stopping at Harsil β€” a remote Himalayan village known for its dense deodar forests and the fast-flowing Bhagirathi river. Continue to Gangotri Dham at 3,100 m.

Gangotri is accessible by road β€” no trek is required. Take a dip in the icy Bhagirathi river and proceed for darshan at the Gangotri Temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Day 07 Uttarkashi to Guptkashi (8 hrs drive)

Drive from Uttarkashi to Guptkashi via Lambgaon and Moolgarh. Along the route, enjoy views of the Mandakini river valley as you descend towards Kedarnath country. Day 08 Guptkashi – Kedarnath (30 km drive + 18 km trek one way)

After an early breakfast, drive from Guptkashi to Sonprayag (approximately 30 km). From Sonprayag, take a shared jeep to Gaurikund β€” the official starting point of the Kedarnath trek. The 18 km trek to Kedarnath passes through dense forests and open alpine terrain at gradually increasing altitude. Pony, palki, and helicopter (Phata/Sirsi helipads) services are available.

Kedarnath Dham sits at 3,553 m and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The ancient stone temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya, who is said to have attained Samadhi here. Seek the blessings of Baba Kedar and check in to your pre-booked accommodation near the temple. Overnight at Kedarnath.

Day 09 Kedarnath – Guptkashi (18 km trek + 30 km drive)

Rise early for the morning aarti at Kedarnath β€” one of the most spiritually charged moments of the entire yatra. After darshan, begin the descent trek to Gaurikund. Board the shared jeep from Gaurikund to Sonprayag, where our driver will be waiting. Drive to Guptkashi. Check in, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 10 Guptkashi to Joshimath (7 hrs drive)

Drive from Guptkashi to Joshimath via Ukhimath and Chopta. The route passes through some of the finest scenery in the Garhwal Himalayas β€” rhododendron and oak forests, alpine meadows at Chopta (often called the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand'), and the Alaknanda river valley. Check in at Joshimath.

In the evening, visit the Narsingh Temple in the town, dedicated to Lord Narasimha (an avatar of Vishnu). Overnight at Joshimath.

Day 11 Joshimath – Badrinath Darshan – Joshimath (45 km one way)

Drive from Joshimath to Badrinath Dham (approximately 45 km / 1.5–2 hrs). Badrinath at 3,133 m is the final and most visited of the four dhams, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Badrinarayan form. Before temple darshan, take a dip at Tapt Kund β€” a natural hot sulphur spring right below the temple.

After darshan, explore nearby sites: Mana village (the last Indian village before the Tibet border), Vyas Gufa and Ganesh Gufa (where the Mahabharata is said to have been composed), Mata Murti Temple, Bhim Pul, and the point where the Saraswati river meets the Alaknanda. Return to Joshimath for overnight stay.

Day 12 Joshimath to Haridwar (8 hrs drive)

Drive down from Joshimath to Haridwar through the Alaknanda valley. En route, stop at Devprayag to see the sacred Triveni Sangam β€” where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers merge to officially form the Ganga. A short stop at Rishikesh β€” the Yoga Capital of the World β€” is optional. Visit Laxman Jhula or Ram Jhula if time permits. Continue to Haridwar. Check in and overnight stay.

Day 13 Haridwar to Delhi to Chennai

After breakfast, check out from the hotel. Drive from Haridwar to Delhi (220 km / 5–6 hrs) and transfer to Delhi airport or railway station in time for your onward journey to Chennai. The Chardham Yatra from Chennai concludes here with memories and blessings to carry home.
