Sample 4-Day Dwarka Somnath Itinerary

A typical 4-day trip from Ahmedabad by road runs like this. The exact day plan for each tour is on its package page.

• Day 1: Drive from Ahmedabad to Dwarka (about 440 km, 8 to 9 hours). Evening Aarti at the Dwarkadhish Temple if you arrive in time.
• Day 2: Morning Darshan at Dwarkadhish and Gomti Ghat, then Rukmini Devi Temple, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and Bet Dwarka over Sudarshan Setu from Okha.
• Day 3: Leave Dwarka after breakfast. The coastal drive to Somnath is 4.5 to 5.5 hours, and a 1 to 2 hour stop at Porbandar for Kirti Mandir and Sudama Mandir still gets you to Somnath before the 7:00 PM Aarti. The light and sound show follows at 7:45 PM.
• Day 4: Morning Darshan at Somnath, Triveni Sangam and Bhalka Tirth, then the drive back to Ahmedabad (about 400 km). Expect to reach by late evening.

Best Time to Visit Dwarka and Somnath

The best time to visit Dwarka and Somnath is from October to March, when the weather is pleasantly cool and ideal for sightseeing and temple visits. This period avoids the intense heat of summer and the heavy monsoon rains.

• April to June: hot and humid on the coast, so plan Darshan for early morning and evening.
• July to September: monsoon. The Somnath light and sound show is usually suspended, and the Gir Jungle Trail safari stays closed from 16 June to 15 October.
• Festivals: Janmashtami in Dwarka, and Maha Shivratri, Shravan month and the Kartik Purnima fair at Somnath bring big crowds. Book hotels well ahead for these dates.

How to Reach Dwarka and Somnath

Reaching Dwarka and Somnath is convenient through various modes of transportation:

• By Air: The nearest airports to Dwarka are Jamnagar (approx. 140 km) and Porbandar (approx. 95 to 110 km, depending on the route). For Somnath, Diu Airport is approx. 85 km away. Keshod Airport is closer but has very few flights. Rajkot (Hirasar) and Ahmedabad have many more flights, with a longer drive. From these airports, you can hire taxis or use public transport to reach your destination.
• By Train: Dwarka has its own railway station on the Okha line, well connected to Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Mumbai. For Somnath, the main railhead is Veraval Junction, around 6 km from the temple. Somnath's own station has been under redevelopment, so check on NTES or IRCTC if your train runs to Somnath or ends at Veraval. The Sabarmati (Ahmedabad) to Veraval Vande Bharat Express takes about 7 hours.
• By Road: Both Dwarka and Somnath are well connected by road. State and private buses operate from cities like Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Porbandar. You can also hire a taxi on the coastal NH-51 highway.

Dwarka to Somnath Distance

Dwarka and Somnath are about 230 to 235 km apart by road. The coastal NH-51 via Porbandar and Mangrol takes 4.5 to 5.5 hours of driving. Add time for breaks and a Porbandar stop.

Dwarka

• Gomti Ghat: 56 steps lead down from the temple's Swarga Dwar to the ghat where the Gomti meets the sea.
• Bet Dwarka: An island believed to be the original residence of Lord Krishna's family. Since February 2024 it is connected to Okha by SuDarshan Setu, a 2.32 km bridge, so you can reach it by road.

• Rukmini Devi Temple: A temple dedicated to Rukmini, the consort of Lord Krishna, about 2 km from the main temple and known for its intricate carvings.

Somnath

• Somnath Temple: The first of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. The present temple, built in the Chaulukya (Maru-Gurjara) style, was consecrated in 1951.
