Why Start Chardham Yatra from Haridwar?

Haridwar is not just a convenient starting point — it is considered the most spiritually appropriate place to begin the Chardham Yatra. Known as the Gateway to Devbhoomi (Land of the Gods), Haridwar is where the sacred Ganga river descends from the Himalayas into the plains.

  • Most pilgrims begin with a holy dip at Har Ki Pauri and attend the evening Ganga Aarti before departing for the hills — a tradition that sets the spiritual tone for the entire Yatra.
  • Starting from Haridwar allows gradual altitude gain across the 10-day journey, which significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Haridwar is extremely well connected by train and road from all major cities across India.
  • All Chardham Yatra registration, biometric, and e-pass formalities can be completed in Haridwar before departure — our team handles this on arrival day.

Chardham Yatra Opening Dates 2026

Packing List for Chardham Yatra from Haridwar

Clothing & Gear (Essential, not optional)

  • Heavy fleece jacket or insulated jacket — mandatory even in May (Kedarnath nights near 0°C)
  • Waterproof rain jacket or poncho — rain is unpredictable in Garhwal year-round
  • Trekking shoes with ankle support and grip — not sandals or sneakers
  • Thermal innerwear, woollen socks, gloves, and warm cap
  • Sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen — UV at altitude is intense

Documents & Money

  • Original government ID (Aadhaar, Passport, or Voter ID)
  • Printed Chardham registration certificate (and soft copy on phone)
  • Cash in small denominations — ATMs in Kedarnath area and Gangotri are limited
  • Power bank — charging is scarce on the Kedarnath trek route

Health & Safety

  • All personal prescription medicines for at least 12 days
  • Diamox (altitude sickness) — consult your doctor before taking
  • ORS sachets, paracetamol, antacids, motion sickness tablets
  • Pulse oximeter if you have cardiac or respiratory history
  • Water bottle (minimum 2 litres capacity — refill at streams on the trek)

Tips for Senior Citizens — Chardham Yatra

  • Get a basic health check (BP, ECG, oxygen level) at least 2 weeks before departure. Senior citizens above 60 may be asked to produce a medical fitness certificate for Kedarnath.
  • Book the Kedarnath helicopter if you have any cardiac, respiratory, or knee condition. Do not skip the dham — the helicopter option is safe and equally meaningful.
  • Request your operator for ground-floor hotel rooms and hotels near medical facilities.
  • Start the Kedarnath day by 4:30 AM. Morning conditions are calmer, cooler, and the queue is shorter.
  • Carry a pulse oximeter. Oxygen levels at 3,500+ m are significantly lower. If SpO2 drops below 85%, inform your guide and rest immediately.
  • Eat light the evening before the Kedarnath day. Avoid heavy meals the night before a high-altitude trek.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Not registering online before departure — you will be stopped at Sonprayag. No exceptions.
  2. Carrying your phone inside Kedarnath temple in 2026 — complete ban, legal action applies.
  3. Wearing flat footwear on the Kedarnath or Yamunotri trek — trekking shoes are non-negotiable.
  4. Starting the Kedarnath trek after 9 AM in peak season — afternoon crowds make the trail much harder.
  5. Skipping meals to save money on the trek day — you will exhaust quickly at altitude without caloric intake.
  6. Not carrying enough cash — plan for at least ₹3,000–5,000 in cash beyond the package cost.
  7. Assuming fast mobile data throughout — network is unavailable beyond Sonprayag and near Uttarkashi. Download offline maps before leaving.
  8. Skipping Mana village near Badrinath — 3 km from the temple, last Indian village, and genuinely unique.

Itinerary Details

Day 01 Haridwar → Barkot | ~210 km | 7–8 hrs

Your driver picks you up from Haridwar railway station or your hotel in the morning. The drive to Barkot winds through the lower Garhwal hills, following the Yamuna valley route via Mussoorie. A brief halt at Kempty Falls is usually included en route — it is a good stretch break before the longer driving days ahead.

Barkot sits on the banks of the Yamuna River at around 1,220 metres. It is a quiet, practical overnight base before Yamunotri. Check in, have dinner, and rest early — Day 2 starts at dawn.

Day 02 Barkot → Yamunotri → Barkot | 45 km road + 6 km trek (one way)

Start by 5:30–6:00 AM. Drive to Janki Chatti (approximately 45 km from Barkot), which is the trekking base for Yamunotri. The 6 km trail from Janki Chatti to the temple is well-laid and manageable at a steady pace. Pony and Doli (palanquin) services are available at Janki Chatti for those who need them — hire directly at the government-regulated counters, not from touts.

At Yamunotri (altitude 3,293 m), take a ritual dip in the Surya Kund hot spring before darshan at the temple. This is the source of the sacred Yamuna river. After darshan, descend to Janki Chatti and drive back to Barkot for dinner and overnight stay.

Yamunotri Trek: 6 km one way | Altitude: 3,293 m | Best start time: 6:00–7:00 AM | Pony available at Janki Chatti

Day 03 Barkot → Uttarkashi | ~85 km | 3–4 hrs

A shorter, more relaxed drive today. After breakfast, check out from Barkot and head toward Uttarkashi — a significant pilgrimage town on the banks of the Bhagirathi river. The drive takes about 3–4 hours.

On arrival, check in to your hotel. In the evening, visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple — one of the most important Shiva shrines in Garhwal, similar in sanctity to its namesake in Varanasi. The Shakti temple adjacent to it is also worth visiting. Uttarkashi market is compact and has basic shops for warm clothes, prasad, and supplies for the days ahead.

Day 04 Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Uttarkashi | ~100 km one way

Leave early — around 5:00 AM. The drive to Gangotri follows the Bhagirathi river upstream through the stunning Harsil valley. Stop at Gangnani on the way, where there is a hot spring (Tapt Kund) — a good warm-up before Gangotri.

Gangotri temple (altitude 3,048 m) sits beside the Bhagirathi river, which is how the Ganga is known at its origin. Take a dip in the sacred river before entering the temple for darshan. The atmosphere here — cold air, roaring river, and the white temple against the backdrop of high peaks — is one of the most vivid impressions of the entire yatra. Drive back to Uttarkashi in the afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 05 Uttarkashi → Guptkashi / Sitapur | ~220 km | 7–8 hrs

The longest driving day of the yatra. After breakfast, check out and head toward Guptkashi via Lambgaon and Moolgarh. The route crosses the Bhagirathi–Mandakini watershed and passes through Tilwara, where you get a first view of the Mandakini river. This is your transition from the Gangotri circuit to the Kedarnath circuit.

On arrival at Guptkashi, visit the Ardhanarishwar temple in the evening if time permits. Guptkashi is mythologically significant — this is where Lord Shiva first hid from the Pandavas before fleeing to Kedarnath. Many operators now book the night stay at Sitapur instead of Guptkashi town, as Sitapur is closer to Sonprayag and saves time on Day 6.

Day 06 Guptkashi → Kedarnath | 30 km road + 16 km trek one way

2026 RULE: Mobile phones, cameras & video recording are COMPLETELY BANNED inside Kedarnath temple premises. Deposit your phone outside before entering. Legal action for violations. — BKTC, April 2026

The most physically demanding day. Wake at 4:00–4:30 AM. Drive to Sonprayag, then take a local shared jeep to Gaurikund (5 km — private vehicles are banned beyond Sonprayag). The Kedarnath trek starts at Gaurikund (1,980 m) and covers 16 km one way to the temple at 3,583 m. This is the government-approved rebuilt route post the 2013 disaster.

The climb takes 6–8 hours on foot. Pony, Doli, and helicopter options are available for those who need them. On reaching Kedarnath, complete the darshan. The evening Aarti at the temple is deeply moving. Overnight stay at Kedarnath or return to Sitapur depending on your preference and package type.

Trek: Gaurikund → Kedarnath | 16 km one way | Altitude gain: ~1,600 m | Start by 5:00 AM | Pony available at Gaurikund | Helicopter: book via heliyatra.irctc.co.in (extra cost)

Day 07 Kedarnath → Guptkashi / Sitapur | 16 km trek + 30 km road

Wake early for the morning Aarti and first darshan at Kedarnath — the temple is at its calmest before 7 AM. Then begin the 16 km descent to Gaurikund. The downhill trek is easier on the lungs but harder on the knees — take it slow and steady. From Gaurikund, drive back to Sitapur/Guptkashi.

En route, those interested can stop at Ukhimath, the winter seat of the Kedarnath idol. Check in to your hotel, eat well, and rest — you have earned it. Tomorrow is a long scenic drive to Badrinath.

Day 08 Guptkashi → Badrinath | ~160–190 km | 6–7 hrs

After breakfast, drive toward Badrinath following the Mandakini and then the Alaknanda river valley. The route passes through Karnaprayag, Nandprayag, Chamoli, and Joshimath before ascending to Badrinath at 3,133 m. The Joshimath stretch can be slow during peak season due to traffic management and ongoing road works.

On arrival at Badrinath, check in and head to the Tapt Kund — the natural hot spring on the Alaknanda's banks — for a ritual bath before darshan at the Badrinath temple. The evening aarti (around 8 PM) is one of the most spiritually intense moments of the entire Chardham journey.

If time allows, visit Mana village (3 km from the temple, last inhabited Indian village before the China border), Bhim Pul, Vyas Gufa, and the 'mukh' (origin) of the Saraswati river.

Day 09 Badrinath → Joshimath → Rudraprayag | ~160 km | 6–7 hrs

Go for early morning darshan at Badrinath (5:30–6:00 AM — the queue is shortest then). After breakfast, drive back toward the plains via Joshimath.

Make a stop at the Narsingh temple in Joshimath — this is where the Badrinath idol is brought every November when the shrine closes for winter. The famous Kalpavriksha tree, believed to be thousands of years old, is also inside the Narsingh temple compound.

If time and energy allow, the Auli ropeway (3 km from Joshimath) offers panoramic views of Nanda Devi and the Himalayan range — optional, approximately ₹700 per person, payable locally. Continue to Rudraprayag or Srinagar (Garhwal) for the overnight stay.

Day 10 Rudraprayag → Rishikesh → Haridwar | ~140 km | 5–6 hrs

The final morning. After breakfast and hotel checkout, drive to Haridwar via Rishikesh. A brief stop at Devprayag — where Bhagirathi and Alaknanda merge to form the Ganga — and the Dhari Devi temple is usually included.

In Rishikesh, pilgrims typically visit Parmarth Niketan, Triveni Ghat, or Ram Jhula before the last leg to Haridwar.

You arrive at Haridwar with the yatra complete. If your timing allows, the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri in the evening is a beautiful and fitting close to this journey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Chardham Yatra package cost from Haridwar in 2026?

The standard package is priced at ₹40,300 per person on double sharing. Add 5% GST (₹2,015) for the total billed cost of approximately ₹42,315. Lunch and dinner are extra (~₹400/day). With Kedarnath helicopter the total cost rises to ₹55,000–70,000 depending on helicopter pricing.

When do all four Chardham temples open in 2026?

In 2026: Yamunotri and Gangotri both opened on 19 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya). Kedarnath opened on 22 April 2026 at 8:00 AM. Badrinath opened on 23 April 2026 at 6:15 AM. The season typically runs through October–November. Kedarnath tentatively closes around 23 October (Bhai Dooj) and Badrinath around 13 November 2026.

Are meals included in the package?

Only daily breakfast is included in the ₹40,300 package. Lunch and dinner are not included and must be arranged independently at hotels, local dhabas, or community langars along the route. Budget approximately ₹350–500 per day per person for meals outside breakfast.

Is Kedarnath trek mandatory or can I take a helicopter?

The trek (16 km from Gaurikund) is included in the standard road package. Helicopter to Kedarnath is optional and costs extra — approximately ₹7,000–15,000 round trip, booked separately at heliyatra.irctc.co.in. Helicopter slots during May–June sell out weeks in advance. Pony and Doli options are also available at Gaurikund, hired locally.

Are mobile phones allowed inside Kedarnath temple in 2026?

No. The BKTC enforced a complete ban on mobile phones inside Kedarnath temple premises starting April 2026. This covers carrying phones, taking photos, shooting videos, and making reels. Phones must be deposited at a designated counter outside the temple. Violations are subject to legal action under applicable laws.

Is Chardham registration free and where do I register?

Yes, registration is completely free. Register online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. You can also register via WhatsApp (send 'Yatra' to 8394833833), via the Tourist Care Uttarakhand mobile app, or at designated offline counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, and at each dham's base town.

How long is the Yamunotri trek?

The Yamunotri trek from Janki Chatti to the temple is 6 km one way. The ascent takes 3–4 hours at a comfortable pace. The trail is rated easy to moderate. Pony and Doli (palanquin) services are available at Janki Chatti, regulated by the district administration at fixed rates.

Can this yatra be done by senior citizens?

Yes — thousands of senior pilgrims complete the Chardham Yatra every season. Key precautions: get a pre-travel medical check, consider booking the Kedarnath helicopter, carry a pulse oximeter, request ground-floor hotel rooms, and do not rush on the trek days. Pilgrimage Tour India has a dedicated senior citizen care framework built into this package.

What happens if a landslide or bad weather disrupts the journey?

Weather disruptions are a real risk in the Garhwal Himalayas, especially in July–August. The standard package terms state that any extra cost due to natural delays is borne by the traveller. The operator will try to adjust the itinerary where possible but cannot guarantee completion in case of major blockages. Purchasing travel insurance with trip interruption cover is strongly advised.

Can the package be customised?

Yes. Pilgrimage Tour India offers customised itineraries — you can upgrade hotels to luxury, add Kedarnath helicopter, extend the trip to include Rishikesh or Chopta, increase the number of nights at any destination, or opt for a group tour instead of a private package. Discuss requirements before booking for a tailored quote.

What is the total distance of Chardham Yatra from Haridwar?

The road circuit from Haridwar covering all four dhams and returning to Haridwar is approximately 1,500–1,600 km by road. This is spread over 10 days of travel. The two treks (Yamunotri: 6 km one way; Kedarnath: 16 km one way) are additional on foot.

How do I book the Kedarnath helicopter for 2026?

Kedarnath helicopter bookings are only accepted through the official IRCTC portal: heliyatra.irctc.co.in. Operating helipads include Phata, Sersi, Sitapur, and Guptkashi. Do not book through unofficial WhatsApp numbers or travel agents claiming guaranteed slots — numerous fraud cases are reported every season. Helicopter cost is NOT included in this package.
