Why Srisailam Is Among the Most Sacred Sites in India

The Mallikarjuna Linga at Srisailam is Swayambhu — self-manifested, not installed by human hands. According to popular Hindu belief, Srisailam is regarded as one of the rare temples associated with both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha — a dual status that is highly significant in Shaivite and Shakta traditions.

The Shakti Peetha tradition holds that Srisailam is where Sati’s neck fell after Vishnu severed the body with the Sudarshana Chakra. The resulting shrine, Bhramaramba Devi, is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas. A single visit here thus encompasses both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha Darshan.

Adi Shankaracharya visited Srisailam and composed the Brahmasiramantram here. The temple is referenced in the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and the Skanda Purana — making it one of the most continuously documented pilgrimage sites in India.

The Legends of Srisailam

The Ganesha-Kartikeya Legend

Shiva challenged his sons: whoever circled the world first would marry first. Kartikeya flew off on his peacock. Ganesha circled his parents, saying “my parents are my world.” Shiva married Ganesha first. Kartikeya, feeling wronged, left for Mount Krounch (Srisailam). Shiva and Parvati came to pacify him — and stayed, manifested as the Jyotirlinga and Shakti Peetha.

The Princess Chandravathi Legend

Princess Chandravathi found a glowing Shiva Linga in the Nallamala forest where a cow offered milk daily. She built a shrine, offering jasmine (Mallika) creepers. The linga became known as Mallikarjuna — Shiva adorned with jasmine.

The Chenchu Tribe Legend

Parvati appeared as a Chenchu tribal girl; Shiva, hunting in the Nallamala forest, fell in love and made her his consort here. The Chenchu tribe, indigenous guardians of Srisailam, celebrate this union today. Their cultural connection is preserved at the Chenchu Lakshmi Tribal Museum near the temple.

Temple Rules and Dress Code

• Traditional attire: dhoti/kurta-pyjama (men), saree/salwar kameez (women). Shorts and sleeveless not permitted.
• No leather items (footwear, belts, wallets) inside the temple complex.
• Mobile phones, cameras, and smartwatches deposited at locker counters before entering the sanctum.
• Photography prohibited inside the Garbha Griha. Gopuram and exterior photography is allowed.
• Holy bath at Patala Ganga before Darshan is traditionally recommended but not mandatory.
• Srisailam is a dry zone. As per local regulations, alcohol is prohibited throughout the town.
• Maintain silence inside; respect ongoing sevas and aartis.

Places to Visit in Srisailam

Patala Ganga — Ropeway & River Ghat

The sacred Krishna River ghat directly below the temple, reached by an ~8-minute ropeway descent with panoramic gorge views. Pilgrims take a holy bath here before Darshan. Boats depart from Patala Ganga to the Akka Mahadevi Caves.

Ropeway timings: generally 8 AM–1 PM and 2:30–5:30 PM. Connectivity and availability may vary — check locally before planning.

Akka Mahadevi Caves — Boat Access Only

Accessible only by boat from Patala Ganga. The caves contain a naturally occurring Shiva Linga. Named after the 12th-century Veerashaiva saint-poet Akka Mahadevi, who meditated here. The river gorge boat ride is one of the most dramatic experiences on any Srisailam sightseeing tour.

Sikharesvara Temple — Hilltop Views

A short, manageable trek above Srisailam. 360-degree views of the Nallamala Hills, Krishna River valley, and Srisailam Dam. Best early morning before haze. Wear closed-toe shoes.

Sakshi Ganapathi — Traditional First Stop

Located ~22 km from Srisailam on the Hyderabad route. Pilgrims traditionally seek Ganesha’s blessing here before proceeding to the Jyotirlinga. Every bus and cab stops here. Temple believed to be over 1,000 years old.

Paladhara Panchadhara — Five Sacred Springs

Five natural springs emerging from the Nallamala hillside — a sacred cleansing site for pilgrims and a pleasant forest walk. Paladhara means “milk flow”; Panchadhara means “five streams.”

Srisailam Dam — Andhra Pradesh’s Engineering Marvel

One of the largest arch dams in India at 145 m height on the Krishna River. The Octopus Viewpoint offers 360-degree views of the reservoir and Nallamala forest. Spectacular during monsoon when spillway gates open.

Chenchu Lakshmi Tribal Museum

Free-entry museum documenting the Chenchu tribe — indigenous forest-dwellers who are the traditional guardians of the Srisailam temple. Their mythological connection to the temple (Parvati as Chenchu girl) makes this a genuinely interesting cultural stop.

Hemareddy Mallamma Temple

Local folk deity temple near the main complex. Significant for regional devotion; typically included on Day 3 sightseeing.

Mallela Theertham Waterfall

A 150-foot waterfall on the Dindi River, ~54 km inside the Nallamala forest. Best October–January. Forest trek required — not recommended during heavy monsoon.

Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve

Among India’s largest tiger reserves (~3,568 sq km). Surrounds Srisailam on all sides. Wildlife: tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wolves. Forest Department permit required for safaris.

How to Book Darshan Online — Step-by-Step

Advance booking is strongly recommended for weekends, Mondays, and all festival periods. The official portal handles Darshan, seva, and accommodation booking.

1. Go to srisailadevasthanam.org
2. Register with mobile number or email; verify via OTP.
3. Select ‘Sevas & Darshanam Booking’.
4. Choose Darshan type (Free, Athi Seegra, VIP, Garbhalaya Abhishekam, etc.).
5. Pick date and available time slot.
6. Enter devotee details: name, age, gender, government ID number.
7. Pay via UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking.
8. Download and print the e-ticket. Carry it with the original government ID.

Garbhalaya Abhishekam (₹5,000) slots are extremely limited — book 2–3 weeks ahead for weekdays, 1–2 months ahead for festivals. Max 5 tickets per transaction.

How to Reach Srisailam

By Road (Most Common)

Hyderabad is the main gateway to Srisailam. Distance: ~213 km via NH44 and Srisailam Highway. The final 40–60 km is a mountain ghat road — avoid night driving. Options: private cab, APSRTC Volvo AC bus from Hyderabad MGBS (Imlibun), ~5–6 hours.

By Train

No station in Srisailam. Nearest: Markapur Road (~85 km, Guntur-Nandyal line) — take a taxi (~2–2.5 hrs). Most pilgrims train to Hyderabad (Secunderabad/Kachiguda) and cab from there.

By Air

Nearest airport: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad (~240 km). Our packages include airport pickup.

Srisailam is a fully vegetarian pilgrimage town. No non-vegetarian food is served anywhere. All restaurants, dhabas, and APTDC guesthouses serve pure vegetarian South and North Indian meals.

The main temple Darshan has a flat approach with manageable steps. Battery-operated vehicles are available in Srisailam town for pilgrims with mobility limitations. The ropeway to Patala Ganga is accessible for most seniors. The Sikharesvara trek and Mallela Theertham forest trail are optional and can be skipped entirely.
