Kamakhya Temple is a famous Hindu temple built in honour of Goddess Kamakhya on Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati, Assam. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and one of the oldest centres of Tantric practice and Devi worship in India. The temple celebrates the woman's power to give birth and is very auspicious for those who follow the Tantric tradition of Hinduism. There is no idol. The goddess is worshipped as a natural cleft in the rock inside a cave, kept moist by an underground spring.
In and around the temple are the shrines of the ten Mahavidyas: Bhuvaneshwari, Chhinnamasta, Bagalamukhi, Tripura Sundari, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Tara, Kali, Kamala and Matangi. Three of them, Tripura Sundari, Matangi and Kamala, are worshipped inside the main temple. The other seven have their own temples on the hill.
Day 2 keeps the morning for Darshan, and the rest of that day depends on how long the queue takes. You can change the plan to suit your pace, and the travel date can be changed free of charge up to 30 days before departure.

Today's Itinerary (Sightseeing)
Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra: This cultural centre in Panjabari shows the life and heritage of the Assamese people through its museum, library and a replica of a traditional Assamese village. It is open on all days, and entry tickets are sold from 10 AM to 7 PM.
Fancy Bazaar and Handicraft Market: A popular shopping area for souvenirs, Assamese silk and local handicrafts.
Overnight in Guwahati. If your flight or train reaches late in the day, Kalakshetra can be moved to Day 3.
Leave the hotel by about 6:30 AM for Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill. The doors open for devotees at 8 AM. On weekends and festival days the general queue can be very long, so keep the whole morning free for Darshan.
General Darshan is free. Special Darshan costs ₹501 per person and has its own, shorter queue. Since 15 June 2026, it is booked online only, through the dedicated portal mkdonline.co.in that the temple names in its official notice. The ticket is not part of the package price. Our team can guide you through the booking before your trip.
After Darshan, you can visit the other temples on the hill. Some are a few steps from the main shrine. Bhuvaneshwari sits at the very top and the cab can take you up. The list includes:
If Darshan finishes in time, drive to the riverfront for the ferry to Umananda Temple on Peacock Island. The island is often called the world's smallest inhabited river island, and a British officer named it Peacock Island because its shape reminded him of a peacock's spread feathers. Assam's Inland Water Transport department runs the ferry. Its boarding point on the Guwahati side has changed more than once in recent years, so your driver will take you to the current one. Ferries run only in daylight. They are suspended when the Brahmaputra rises in the monsoon, and at times in the dry season when the water is too shallow. On the island, a flight of steps leads up to the Shiva temple. The ferry fare is paid directly.
In the evening, you can go for a river cruise on the Brahmaputra (can be availed with direct payment, subject to operation).

Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra is a cultural complex in Guwahati named after Srimanta Sankaradeva, the 15th and 16th century saint, scholar and social reformer of Assam. It is a good place to start a trip to the Northeast. The complex has a central museum with objects used by the communities of Assam, a library and an artists' village built like a traditional village. You visit it on Day 1, and it is open on all days.
Kamakhya Temple is a Shakti Peetha that represents the female power of Shakti. There is no idol; pilgrims worship the yoni of the goddess as a natural cleft in the rock inside the sanctum. The temple is best known for the belief in the goddess's menstruation. As per tradition, in the month of Ashadha (Ahaar in the Assamese calendar), the goddess menstruates for three days and the temple stays closed. This is observed as the Ambubachi Mela, which draws lakhs of devotees. Tantric rituals are also performed here.
Two days are enough for Darshan and the Nilachal Hill temples when the queue is short. The third day in this tour leaves room for a long queue on Day 2 and adds Navagraha and Basistha before you leave.

Yes, with some planning. Cars can go up the hill to a multi-level parking about a five-minute walk from the temple entrance. Inside, rock steps lead down into the cave sanctum, and the general queue can mean hours of standing on busy days. For elderly travellers we suggest booking special Darshan. Umananda has a flight of steps from the jetty and can be skipped.
October to February, when the weather is cooler and drier. July to September brings heavy rain, and the Umananda ferry can be suspended when the Brahmaputra rises. June has Ambubachi Mela, which is the most important time spiritually, but the temple is shut for three days and very crowded after it reopens.
Yes, but plan around the closure. In 2026, the temple doors closed on the night of 22 June and reopened on the morning of 26 June, and special Darshan was not available on 26 and 27 June. The temple announces each year's timings closer to the date. Hotels fill early and rates differ for these days.
Day 1 covers Kalakshetra and Fancy Bazaar. Day 2 covers the temples on Nilachal Hill, plus Umananda if the queue and the ferry allow. On Day 3 you choose from Navagraha, Basistha, Balaji, ISKCON and the zoo, depending on your departure time.
