Kathmandu literally has more temples than houses situated there. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. He is also known as Pashupati, the Lord of Pashus (animals). Pashupatinath temple is considered as one of the sacred temple of Hindus. And is situated along the banks of the sacred Bagmati river. The major festival that is celebrated in this temple is Maha Shivratri. Another point of attraction is the evening aarti done on the shores of River Bagimati. A large number of devotees from India and other countries visit here.
The 12 Jyotirlingas that are worshiped in India are the body parts and the Jyotirlinga in Pashupatinath is the head of the body. According to legends Lord Shiva took the form of a buffalo to escape from Pandavas, who were searching him to absolve themselves for their sins. But when they found out that the buffalo is Lord Shiva himself they tried to convince him. Buffalo buried his face in the surface of the ground. When Panadavas tried to pull his head out of the land the face of the buffalo went straight to Nepal’s Kathmandu, where now lays the Pashupatinath temple.
