Koneswaram temple is an ancient time Hindu temple. This temple is located in Trincomalee district of Sri Lanka. This colorful medieval temple is situated atop the Konesar Malai on the Gokarna Bay. The temple is surrounded by a picturesque view of the Indian Ocean. Koneswaram temple is dedicated to the mighty Lord Shiva. This temple is also considered as one of the five abodes of Lord Shiva ‘Pancha Ishwarams’. Temple has been mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Koneswaram temple is also known as the temple of Thousand Pillars. The exact date of establishment of the temple could not be recognized. The literature used on the inscriptions in royal charters was from 5th to 18th century. So it is estimated that the temple might be built around 400 BC.
According to legends that in the starting the temple consisted of a rock cave which was then multi-layered with brick. It is said that King Ravana and his mother used to worship Lord Shiva in this temple. But when Ravana’s mother was in bad health he wanted to remove the shrine. Then Lord Shiva made him drop his sword. But still a crack was created on the rock, which is now known as ‘Ravana Vettu’.
The festivals that are held in this temple are Ther chariot, Navaratri and the Shivratri. Ther chariot is celebrated in the month of April for 20 days. And Navratri is celebrated for 9 days; this festival is dedicated to the nine goddesses. Whereas Shivratri is dedicated to Lord Shiva as it is his birthday. The temple is filled with joy and happiness during these festivals.
