e-Tourist Visa on the official portal well before you fly. Four days is the minimum, not a promise. Complete the e-Arrival Card, see your doctor at least a month before leaving, and buy insurance that covers India. Choose your travel month by region, and book a car with a driver and airport assistance in advance. Save 112 for emergencies and 1363 for the tourist helpline.

Visa and Entry Rules

Citizens of many countries can apply online for an e-Tourist Visa valid for 30 days, 1 year or 5 years. Apply only on the Government of India portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in, because lookalike sites exist. The portal asks for applications at least four days before arrival. That is a cut-off, not a processing time, so apply weeks ahead.

Your passport needs at least six months of validity from the date you arrive.

India also asks foreign visitors to submit an online e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival.

Carry a printout of your Electronic Travel Authorisation and confirm that its status shows ‘granted’. Fingerprints and a photo are taken at immigration.

An e-Visa cannot be extended, and it is not valid for Protected, Restricted or Cantonment areas, which need separate permission. See the Indian consulate’s e-Visa rules.

If you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, carry your vaccination certificate. Without it you may be quarantined for six days.

Health and Insurance for Older Travellers

Vaccines and Your Doctor

See your doctor or a travel clinic at least a month before departure, earlier if you need several vaccines. The US CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines for most travellers to India. For hepatitis B it recommends vaccination for unvaccinated adults under 60 and says older adults may choose it, so your doctor decides based on your history.

Food and Water

Drink only sealed bottled, boiled or filtered water, and use it to brush your teeth.

Eat freshly cooked, hot food. Treat that as a starting point. Delhi and the northern plains have severe air pollution from October through winter, often worst after Diwali. Government warnings for severe episodes say it can seriously affect people with heart or lung disease, so if you have either, check the daily air quality index, carry a well-fitting mask and spend fewer days in Delhi.

The Himalayan shrines run on their own calendar. In 2026 Yamunotri and Gangotri opened on 19 April (Akshaya Tritiya), Kedarnath on 22 April and Badrinath on 23 April, and they close for winter around November. Plan around the dates announced for your year.

Travel Tips for Older Visitors: Getting Around India

Flights And Airports

Tell the airline about wheelchair or boarding help when you book, and confirm it at least 48 hours before departure, as DGCA rules ask. Indian airlines must carry mobility aids and assist passengers with reduced mobility at no extra charge, from the terminal to the aircraft and again on arrival. They can charge passengers who do not need the service, so request it only if you do. Arrive early, and repeat the request for each domestic leg.

Trains

Short daytime journeys in air-conditioned chair cars can suit older visitors with good mobility, though steps and crowded platforms are the usual problem. Foreign visitors can book on IRCTC with passport details and an international card. Indian Railways reserves a Foreign Tourist Quota on selected trains, and its booking rules have changed over the years, so check IRCTC or a registered agent. Ask for a lower berth on overnight trains.

Cars, Drivers and Hotels

Many older visitors hire a car with a driver through a registered operator. As a rule of thumb, keep drives to about four or five hours a day, because traffic is unpredictable. We suggest three nights in each base, with a rest day after the long flight.

When you book a hotel, ask for a lift that fits a wheelchair, a ground-floor room, a step-free entrance, a western-style toilet with grab rails, and the distance to the nearest hospital. Bring a folding wheelchair or walker if you use one.

Packing and Money

Loose cotton clothes, a warm layer, a sun hat and shoes that slip off easily at temples. Ponies, palkis and dolis are available on the Kedarnath and Yamunotri routes, so you can ride part of the way, but the cold and the altitude stay the same.

Registration is compulsory, on the Uttarakhand portal or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app, which has an option for foreign pilgrims. You get a registration letter with a QR code that checkpoints verify, and later a Yatri Darshan Certificate. If you forget, the state FAQ says you can register on the road, on the portal or at a registration centre.

Pilgrims over 65 should ask Uttarakhand Tourism about age and medical-certificate rules before booking. Operator and news sources describe extra medical clearance for older pilgrims, but we could not find one clear official rule.

The state’s health advisory asks every pilgrim to complete a thorough check-up beforehand, and the 2026 advisory says two to three weeks before. Carry medicines with prescriptions and your doctor’s contact, drink at least 2 litres of fluids a day, and avoid driving mountain roads between 10 pm and 4 am.

Take altitude seriously if you are over 60. Ask your doctor if your heart, lungs and blood pressure can handle 3,000 metres and above, and do not start altitude medicine without their advice. The state advisory lists these warning signs: headache, dizziness, drowsiness, chest tightness, nausea, vomiting, cough, fast breathing and a racing heartbeat. Stop climbing and call 104 or 108. Do not go higher until symptoms clear, and go down at once with confusion, trouble walking or breathlessness at rest.

Phones and cameras are barred inside the temple premises at Badrinath and Kedarnath, where storage is provided outside. Gangotri and Yamunotri keep a 100-metre no-gadget zone.

Entry for non-Hindu visitors changed in 2026. On 10 March the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee resolved to bar non-Hindus from 47 temples, including Badrinath and Kedarnath, and its chairman later said non-Hindus can enter by submitting an affidavit of faith. Gangotri’s committee set its own conditions, and Yamunotri’s welcomes all devotees. These are committee decisions that may change, so confirm with the committee or a registered operator before you plan.

Planning India for Yourself or Senior Relatives?

Tell us your nationality, the age and mobility of each traveller, any health conditions, your interests and the month you want to travel.
