It was originally built with one Hanuman Temple but expanded over time. Neem Karoli Baba’s real name was Lakshman Narayan Sharma. He was born in Akbarpur, a village in Uttar Pradesh. At the young age of 11 years, he got married, but he soon left his home, only to return later after much request from his father. However, in 1958, he gave up worldly pleasures and started wandering about the country again.

Over time, he travelled extensively through the northern part of India, meditating and preaching. He was known for his simple and humble nature, while also having many spiritual powers. One of the most famous tales related to his mystical abilities is that once while travelling through Uttar Pradesh in a train without a ticket, he was forced to deboard at a station called Neem Karoli in Farrukhabad. After this, the train seemed unable to start despite many attempts. It was only after he was asked to board again that it started — and this is why he came to be known as Neeb Karori Baba.

This story is only one of the many tales that people have narrated about his spiritual presence. In his name, over 100 temples have been built across India. The two primary ashrams are Kainchi Dham in Uttarakhand and Samadhi Temple in Vrindavan. At the age of 73, he passed away in Vrindavan after slipping into a diabetic coma. Neem Karoli Baba’s Samadhi (memorial) is at Vrindavan, where he passed away. Kainchi Dham, where he spent the last decade of his life, is his primary ashram and spiritual seat. Devotees flock here because this is where Maharaj Ji lived, preached, and built his community — and the spiritual energy of his presence is felt most strongly here.

Kainchi Dham originally had a Hanuman Temple. It now also has a Vaishnavi Temple and the Neem Karoli Baba Temple, which is the main attraction for those visiting. Its fame spread beyond India largely because of Baba Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), who visited this ashram in the 1960s, stayed with Baba Neem Karoli for a few years, and ultimately spread his teachings in the West through his seminal book ‘Be Here Now’.

Global Devotees and Famous Visitors

The reach of Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings extends far beyond India.
