The reserve is divided in to two areas. The first zone is known as the Core. The Core covers the area in Chhattisgarh. The area covering Amarkantak is referred to as the Buffer zone. The buffer zone is found on rocky areas, with perennial streams. It is on a rocky plateau in Amarkantak. It is largely toured by the tourists visiting other parts of Madhya Pradesh. The reserve due to it vegetation, experiences three main seasons. The summer is considered to be very hot. The winter and the monsoon are the other main seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The reserve has tropical vegetation. It has over one hundred and fifty plant families.\u00a0 The pteridophytes are over twenty families. It also has an extensive amount of terrestrial plant. Among these are the ferns and drosera. The reserve is considered as one of the most diversified in terms of flora and fauna. It is widely used by research institutes.\u00a0 Among the fauna in the reserve, there are over one hundred bird species. These belong to an approximate of fifty bird families. The reserve has among others a few of the extinct species of birds. Other animals reserved here include tigers, chital, panthers, bears, black duck, spotted deer, gaur, sambhars, Barking deer and wolves. These are either in the sanctuary or in their forest natural settings.\u00a0 This depends on whether an animal is orphaned or injured for it to be taken into the sanctuary. Among the most religions in the area are the Jain and Hindus. Amarkantak has several temples with historical and religious significance to the people. The main temples include the Narmada Kund temples. These are more than five temples built at the source point of river Narmada.\u00a0 They include the Shiva temple, the Durga temple, the Eleven Rudra temple, Shiv temple and Shri Ram Janki temple. All these attract tourists who visit the Narmada river origin. The other outstanding Hindu temple is the Kalachuri ancient temple. These were built in the 18th century.\u00a0 These are behind the Narmada Kund, the source of the river. Their ancient architecture is outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Shri Jwaleshwar Mahadev temple is located eight kilometers from Amarkantak. The temple is the origin of river Johilla. Though not a large river, many tourists still visit the temple area to view the river source point. The Jain temples are not as many as the Hindu temples. The most well established Jain temple is referred to as the Shri Sarvodaya Digambar temple. It is located on a hill station.\u00a0 It is also at the starting point of Narmada river. The temple is famous for its Jain idol. The temple is said to have he worlds\u2019 largest Jain idol, measuring up to twenty four feet high. The temple is made of pink sand stone.\u00a0 It is approximately sixteen thousand meters square (16,000 square meters). Amarkantak has several temples in the buffer reserve. It is over seven hundred kilometers. Son (Sone) River is on the east of the largest Narmada River. The river course flows through Amarkantak and pours into Kaimur ranges. From here, it can be traced up to Uttar Pradesh state.\u00a0 From the origin point, Son flows over several other districts. These include the Dehri, Panna and Sidhi districts.\u00a0 It also flows into and through several states. The states include Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar states. River Son is said to flow through only one region known as Baghelkhand. It is a source of livelihood for many in these districts.\u00a0 It is at an elevation of approximately six hundred meters altitude. Son has two major tributaries.<\/p>\n<p>These are the North Koel and the Rihand River. The river has several dams and bridges constructed across it. The Bansagar dam was the first to be constructed.
