It is one of the 12 most sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Jyotirlinga of this temple is very unique. According to the legends, it is said that Lord Rama after killing Ravana arrived at the spot where today Rameswaram Temple is located. He wanted to worship Lord Shiva as he was feeling sorry for killing the demon, King Ravana. He requested Lord Hanuman to bring a Shivling from Mount Kailash. Hanuman agreed but he delayed the return. Due to this delay, Goddess Sita built Lord Shiva’s shrine with the coastal sand.

After Lord Hanuman’s arrival, the shiva lingam he brought was also erected beside the temple. This is why there are two Shivling in Rameswaram temple. One which was built by Sita is known as Ramalingam and the one brought by Lord Hanuman is called Vishwalingam.

The history of Rameshwaram Temple is as great as this legend. In the 15th century, Rameshwaram temple was constructed by the kings King Udaiyan Sethupati and Nagoor Vaishya.
