Mata Brahmacharini – Second Day of Navratri Puja

Mata Brahmacharini is the second form of Mata Durga and she is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. She is portrayed as a very quiet and highly pious woman or Sanyasini, who loves simplicity. It is said that Goddess Parvati was a great Tapasvini and to get Lord Shiva as her husband she performed many penance and she performed very difficult austerity as well. Mata Brahmacharini spent almost 1000 years like this performing such difficult penance. In those 1000 years, she lived an extremely simple life and she survived on flowers, fruits and leafy vegetables and she even slept on floor. When Lord Shiva saw all this, he agreed to marry her. Since then, this unmarried form of Mata Parvati is known as Mata Brahmacharini which is also known as Mata Yogini and Mata Tapaswini.

It is said during the Nine days of Navratri Mata Durga resides on Earth and bless her devotees. Therefore, these days are believed to be the best days for performing penance to make Goddess Durga happy. A person who performs all rituals by heart and take fasts and have full faith and devotion in his/her heart is always get blessed by the Goddess with happy and peaceful life.

Mata Brahmacharini always walked bare foot while living in the Jungle. She spent her 1000 years living a very simple and quiet life performing penance very silently and without even complaining and having regrets in her mind and heart. The devotees of Mata Brahmacharini always leads a life of happiness and no worries. To make Mata Brahmacharini happy you should follow the following things.

  1. Be loyal to Mata Brahmacharini as she believes in loyalty and love.
  2. Love everyone and respect everyone and value each soul below or above to you.
  3. As she is a Tapaswini, she gets impressed by simple offerings.

Rituals to follow while worshiping Mata Brahmacharini

On the first day, you should worship Mata Brahmacharini with rice, flowers, sandalwood in the Kalash. You should give her a bath milk, curd and honey and should offer her Prasad as well. After offing Mata Prasad surround her with Supari and remember one thing Mata Brahmacharini is always worshipped after the Kalash Dev, the lord of villages, towns and planets.

Take a beautiful flower in your hand and now chant a mantra.

दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमाला कमण्डल!
देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा!!

Now you should give her bath of Panchamrit and should offer rice, Kumkum and flowers. Put a Flower “Mala” on the idol made of red flowers and lotus. Now, perform Aarti with Diya filled with pure ghee having Paan, Supari and Prasada on the “Thaal”. It is also said that a person who puts Swadhisthana Chakra while worshipping Devi gets all his desires fulfilled by the Mata.

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।
दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमाला कमण्डलु !
देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा!!

Meaning: Mata Brahmacharini is a “Tapasvini” form of Goddess who gives freedom to kaama and anger. She wears white clothes and she holds Rudraksha Mala, Lotus flower and Kamandalu in her hands.
