It comprises of Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys. It is situated in the Tungnath mountain range. The prime attraction of Tungnath is Tungnath Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the world’s highest temples in the world and among the five Panch Kedar temples it is the highest. It is also an excellent meditation spot. Tungnath also houses many other popular attractions and trek trails. You can reach Tungnath via multiple ways including by road, air, and train depending on your budget and preference. How To Reach Tungnath

By Flight

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Tungnath. From Dehradun, Tungnath is situated at a distance of around 232 kilometers. You will get a bus from Dehradun to Rudraprayag or Ukhimath. From both these places you will have to find a reliable transport option to reach Chopta, which can usually be done by hiring a taxi.

  • Regular flights to Dehradun from New Delhi are Go First, Vistara, Indigo, and Spice Jet.
  • Regular flights to Dehradun from Mumbai are Air Asia, Vistara, Indigo, Go First, and Spice Jet.
  • Regular flights to Dehradun from Chandigarh are Air Asia, Go First, Vistara, Indigo, and Spice Jet.

Time Taken by the flights are:

  • Mumbai to Dehradun: 2 hours 15 minutes approximately.
  • New Delhi to Dehradun: 1 hour 5 minutes approximately.
  • Chandigarh to Dehradun: 4 hours 35 minutes approximately.

By Train

Rishikesh is the closest railway station to Tungnath situated at a distance of around 240 km but a convenient option is to reach Haridwar Railway station. Haridwar Railway station has many more connected routes and frequent departures and arrivals of trains. Once you have reached Rishikesh or Haridwar, you can take a bus to Tungnath. Buses or taxis are available outside the railway station till Chopta from where you will have to start your journey on foot. You can reach Tungnath through the Kund-Gopeshwar road.

  • Trains from Mumbai to Haridwar: Bandra Terminus-Haridwar Express, Mumbai LTT-Haridwar Express, Kochuveli, Bandra Terminus-Haridwar Express, Yog Nagri Rishikesh, etc.
  • Trains from New Delhi to Haridwar: Ujjaini Express, Mussoorie Express, Kalinga Utkal Express, Uttaranchal Express, etc.
  • Trains from Chandigarh to Haridwar: Amritsar-Dehradun Express, Hemkunt Express, Amritsar-Haridwar Jan Shatabdi Express, etc.

Time Taken By Main Trains:

  • Mumbai to Haridwar: Around 25 hours and 25 minutes.
  • New Delhi to Haridwar: Around 4 hours 13 minutes.
  • Chandigarh to Haridwar: Around 2 hours 19 minutes.

By Road

Private and state-owned buses run regularly to and fro from the neighboring states and cities to Chopta. If you are traveling to Chopta from Delhi, you will have to cover nearly 448 km of distance on the road and the remaining 3.5 km to Tungnath on foot. The trek to Tungnath from Chopta can be covered easily in around 2-3 hours.

How to Reach Chopta By Road

  • Route from Delhi: You’ll have to take the Delhi – Meerut – Haridwar – Rishikesh – Srinagar Garhwal – Rudraprayag Kund – Chopta
  • Public Transport: From Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate ISBT, buses to Rishikesh are available. From Rishikesh, you can catch a bus early in the morning to Ukhimath, and then you can take a taxi to Chopta.
  • Shared Taxis: Alternatively, you can take a shared taxi from Rishikesh to Srinagar or Rudraprayag, and then you can take another taxi to Ukhimath. You will then take a taxi to Chopta.
  • Travel Tip: To reach Chopta you should start early in the morning within daylight hours.

You can embark on an enjoyable drive to Chopta as it has good connectivity through the roads. To visit Tungnath Temple, you will have to first visit Chopta which is situated at a distance of around 3.5 km. You will have to trek for around two to three hours to reach the temple. If you’re looking to go by public transport you have the option to take a bus to Haridwar or Rishikesh from New Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate.

Routes you can take to reach Chopta:

  • Chandigarh to Chopta: NH7, Roorkee-Fatehpur-Kalsiya Marg.
  • New Delhi to Chopta: NH7, NH334.

Time Taken by Fastest Routes:

  • Chandigarh to Chopta: 9 hours 34 minutes approximately.
  • New Delhi to Chopta: 9 hours approximately.

Trekking to Tungnath from Chopta

After reaching Chopta, you will have to begin trekking toward Tungnath. The trek to Tungnath from Chopta is about a gradual climb, and you will get to enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayas along the way. The trek is very easy making it ideal for even first-time trekkers.

From the base, you will have to climb around 1.5 kilometers and during the entire route, you can enjoy the surreal views of the stretched and long grass fields. For trekkers, it is the first step, and you can see people sitting on the grass field. You will also find some food joints on the right and left sides of the trail. En route to Tungnath, you can stop by three specific spots –Deoria Tal, Sari, and Chopta.

The entire trek is well-maintained, and on both sides, there are some benches. It will take around three hours to complete the entire trek if you’re looking to reach the Tungnath temple from Chopta.
