  • The War-Pandavas of Mahabharata won the war of Kurukshetra but they were guilt ridden. They wanted to repent for their sins to Lord Shiva.
  • Pandavas Search in Varanasi-First the Pandavas travelled to Varanasi but Lord Shiva wanted to avoid them as he was angry by the war. Sol He avoided them by taking the form of a bull.
  • Lord Shiva Disguised- Pandavas searched for Lord Shiva in the Himalayan Mountains. But, after some time Bhima spotted a bull in Guptkashi. He identified Lord Shiva in the form of a bull. Bhima grabbed the tail of the bull but the bull left his hump and vanished into the earth.
  • Lord Shiva Reappeared– Lord Shiva was pleased with the constant search and devotion of Pandavas. So He reappeared in 5 parts in different areas. In Kedarnath he reappeared as a bull Hump. In Tungnath, his arms reappeared. In Rudranath, his face reappeared, In Madhyamaheshwar, his navel and stomach reappeared, his hairs (mated jata of Lord Shiva) are worshipped. . All these parts are in the form of a Jyotirlinga. Pandavas built 5 temples at each site, forming Panch Kedar.
  • Visiting Badrinath Temple -There is a tradition of devotees first visiting Badrinath (abode of Lord Vishnu) after visiting Panch Kedar.

Religious Significance of Madhyamaheshwar Temple

Madhyamaheshwar is a significant temple among the five Panch Kedars. A visit to the temple offers a deeply spiritual experience. Every year pilgrims embark on the journey of Panch Kedar Yatra which includes five temples of Lord Shiva – Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar.  It is said that devotees who visit Madhyamaheshwar temple get rid of sins and attain salvation. In fact, devotees visit Panch Kedars to attain Shiva’s blessings.

The temple of Madhyamaheshwar has a central shrine dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva. Nearby a sacred tank is located where devotees take a holy dip before entering the temple. Representing the divine union of Shiva and Shakti. The grounds here are decorated with impressive stone sculptures that depict significant events from Shiva’s life and various narratives from Hindu scriptures.
