Badrinath enjoys the unique distinction of being on the itinerary of chota char dham yatra and also the major char dham yatra. The temple set against the backdrop of the Majestic Nilkanth mountains of the Nar Narayan range of Himalayas is the easiest to access and houses the idol of Lord Vishnu. It is said the Lord meditated for a long time and his consort Goddess Laxmi assumed the form of a Badri tree to protect him from bitter cold and biting wind. At that time the area used to be full of badri trees and because the Goddess assumed the form of the tree the Lord is known as Badrinarayan. Bathing in the river here and praying to the Lord washes away one’s sins.
